Carpet whipping in Worthing: everything you need to know
What it is, what it costs, how to measure and how to get it done locally.
If you have just had a new carpet fitted in Worthing or anywhere in Sussex, there is a good chance you have a decent offcut rolled up in the garage. Carpet whipping is the simplest way to turn that offcut into something useful: a door mat, hall runner, stair runner or rug that matches your new floor exactly.
What is carpet whipping?
Carpet whipping is a finishing stitch sewn tightly around the cut edge of a carpet using a specialist whipping machine. The yarn wraps over the edge again and again, locking the backing and pile in place so the edge cannot fray, unravel or shed.
It is different from carpet binding, where a strip of fabric tape is sewn or glued along the edge. Whipping gives a softer, rounded, hand-finished look that suits most domestic carpets, and the yarn can be matched to almost any colour.
Why get carpet whipped?
- Stops fraying so the carpet lasts for years
- Uses up offcuts instead of throwing them away
- Matches your floor because it is the same carpet
- Costs less than buying a ready-made rug of the same size and quality
- Any size or shape, including long runners and awkward caravan layouts
What can be whipped?
Most cut-pile and loop-pile carpets, including wool, wool blends and synthetics, can be whipped. Common jobs we do are door mats and hall runners, stair runners and stair pads, resizing rugs after a house move, and removable caravan and motorhome carpets.
How much does carpet whipping cost?
Our prices are simple and based on the length of edge:

| Cutting / straighteningper linear metre | £1.75 |
| Internal cornersper corner | £3.75 |

How to measure
Measure each edge that needs whipping and add them together. A mat 3 metres long and 1 metre wide, whipped all round, is 3 + 1 + 3 + 1 = 8 linear metres. For a straight stair runner you usually only need the two long sides whipped, as the ends are tucked under or fixed at the top and bottom of the stairs.
